I went and saw Episode III at 10 a.m. today in a theater that was mostly empty except for the scattering of older people who have neither school nor work. Revenge of the Sith is possibly the best in saga, and definitely THE best of the prequels.

Best in the saga?

I haven't seen it yet...will be doing so around 10:15pm tonight...but...best in the saga? Was it the special effects?

What...how....hrm....I just have a hard time imagining it being better than RoTJ, much less better than Empire.

It's dark and unrelenting, and while it has its flaws I thought it was very well executed. I may favor it over RotJ because it is more fresh (and devoid of Ewoks), but ESB has always been my favorite and I'm not sure if I can even compare the two until I've seen RotS again.

Definitely tell me what you think. My view may be biased by the fanboy crush syndrome.

Well I saw it. The wooden acting killed it for me. I **wanted** to feel more...drama? sympathy? frustration? anger?....during Anakin and Obi-Wan's duel on Mustafar. Anakin's final words to Obi-Wan?

"I hate YOU!"

Just petulant. For me, it screwed up their meeting again in the Death Star 20-some-odd years later. Maybe Darth did some growing up over that period of time.

Hearing James Earl Jones saying "and what about Padme"...

Plus, the look on that kid's face when Anakin lights up the saber...kinda laughable.

Anyway, the movie pained me. So much wasted opportunity, especially given the original trilogy's longevity. There was an emotional high-point in RotJ where Luke gives into his anger and starts bashing the shit out of Vader. There's such a...high there that the new trilogy can't match, and I can't help but thinking its coz Lucas stepped back and let other's direct it for him (altho I hear Marquand was incompetant, and Lucas did much of the actual direction himself). Must be why I love ESB so much, w/ Kushner at the helm.

Maybe I'll have to see it a second time.

If you get a chance, try to pick up a copy of Mathew Stover's novelization of RotS. Simply fucking awesome. He elaborates on much of what ISN'T in the movie (or whatever's on the cutting room floor). And he uses this device...."This is what it feels like to be Anakin Skywalker right now"...simplistic, yes, but fucking effective.

Still, I'm glad that people are enjoying it. Now I hope that Lucas might allow others to play in his universe. I think you and I have discussed that before. A pipedream, but a worthwhile one.

The wooden acting had become a staple of the prequels thus far so I just accepted it and tried not to be too critical of it. I may be wrong, but I kept thinking that Hayden had improved a lot over his performance in Ep II.

I don't understand why people are assuming that as soon Anakin/Vader was fitted with the mask and cybernetics he would act like the Vader we know from the original trilogy (who is 20 years or so older in EP IV and another 7-10 years older than that in EP VI) and not the same (somewhat flawed) character that we've seen act like a total douche-hole on several occasions as he is maturing. So the "what about padme?...NOoooOOOoooOOOO!" scene made sense to me.

I agree...the part where Luke is dominating Vader is definitely a dead-perfect climax, and one that hasn't been topped.

I may read the book by Stover. I just started re-reading Zahn's post-RotJ trilogy.

I decided to postpone the Zahn trilogy and read RotS instead. You are correct sir on all accounts.

I think I need to see it again before I make that judgement.
There were things about it I loved and things about it I didn't like at all.

The end of the line for the theater (even the people who already had their tickets) was a half mile from the theater.
I shit you not. And we were 40 minutes early!!!
Of course, I'm speaking of the midnight showings last night.

I definitely need to see it again before I can say for certain that it is THE best in the saga, but I thought it was great. I'm admittedly a biased fanboy, and since it is something fresh I'm eager to watch it again already.

I was downright pissed when Vader put his arms out and said, "Nooooo!" about Padme's death.
It was so bad.
He shouldn't have said anything, straightened his posture and then made shit start to crush under the weight of his anger.
But maybe I'm being nit-picky.

However, I'll totally go see it a couple more times in the theater. HA!

Eh. That's still Anakin with the suit and cybernetics, and that's probably what you'd expect for him to do without it. It was a little cheesy but that's nothing new for Star Wars dialogue, even the original trilogy had some pretty cheesy moments. The prequels' dialogue, and especially Hayden Christensen's performance was noticeably lackluster...but I thought James Earl Jones delivered the machined voice just as Hayden would. It could have been better, but it's George Lucas...not Shakespeare.

Here's the thing... Hayden is actually quite the actor.
He was unbelievably awesome in Life As A House.
It has more to do with Lucas not being an "actor's director", which he admits. Plus I'm sure green screen stuff is hard.

Again, there were many things I freaking loved too.
I mean, c'mon...it's Star Wars!!!!

Yeah it was good!
Mostly empty? That's funny, considering how packed new hit movies are around opening, and the way Star Wars fans around here were talking you'd think it was a national holiday. In the theater where we saw it, every seat was taken, so they checked your tickets to let you into the building, and again to get into the show. There were a scattering of light sabers, a guy in a Jar Jar mask, and a guy who randomly brought a guitar to entertain the crowd while we snagged seats and waited for the movie to start.

It was packed last night at midnight from what I understand. I opted for an early a.m. show when most people of the annoying kind would be stuck in school or work. I'd say that the theater was only filled to a little over 1/4 of its capacity.

I saw it tonight at 10:15pm. The theatre was only 1/10th full. Probably depends on the area, I guess.
