Dec. 10th, 2003 07:32 amMy friend Damon and I drove to St. Louis/Sauget, IL (Pop's) on Saturday and saw the Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore, Children of Bodom, and Hypocrisy show. It was definitely the coolest music venue I've ever been to. We were lucky and showed up early enough that we were two of about seven people who they allowed to stand inside the foyer and have a few brews while a couple of hundred people were freezing their ass off in line outside. I thought one of the security guys was going to throw us out, but he just walked up to me, motioned outside, and said, "they look pretty fucking cold standing out there don't they?" Also, I've never been able to sit at a bar while drinking beer and having the perfect view of four bands that I really dig, so I took a liking to the place immediately. I just typed, "really dig."
Hypocrisy opened the show and the sound was solid and clear. They played a lot of old material, only one from Catch 22, and closed with the crowd favorite Roswell 47. Children of Bodom...Holy Hell these guys were fun. They opened their set with Follow the Reaper and tore through half an hour's worth of material including Needled 24/7 and You're Better Off Dead before closing with Everytime I Die. Their energetic performance made the other three bands look like sloths in comparison.
I've been waiting to see Nevermore for years, and they put on a great show that seemed too damn short. The only disappointments were the inclusion of The Sound of Silence in their setlist (am I the only person who is annoyed by this cover?), and their opener (Narcosynthesis!!!!!!) and second song (the Seven Tongues of God) were plagued with a short in Warrel's microphone cord. He switched mics as they launched into Engines of Hate, followed by the River Dragon and I Voyager in flawless execution. The bartender had a beer at the ready each time I set down an empty bottle. It was all just so goddamned beautiful.
Dimmu Borgir headlined, and while I wasn't really a fan of theirs before the show, I think I'm acquiring a taste for their material....or at least the latest two releases. They were so damn loud that I had to wear the ear plugs that I brought with me. With the ear plugs in I couldn't hear the guitar in the mix at all, but with the ear-plugs out I couldn't handle the volume. I spent the entirety of their performance trying to keep the plugs in a position where everything sounded right while preserving my auditory senses. They opened the set with the first three tracks from Death Cult Armageddon, played a lot of songs I didn't know (one was in norwegian), and then closed with Spellbound by the Devil. Good wholesome family fun it was. I wish I could see more tours like this without having to travel two states away, but I'll take what I can get.
In other news, Wocky and Monkeybutt are almost friends, but bloody hell still breaks loose a couple of times a day when he looks at her the wrong way. Females. And stillwe he never learns.
Life is busy, and I'm never sure what I want to narrate in prose or leave to conversation and memory until the moment for journalistic recollection has fallen victim to ADD holocaust. And so it goes.
