Subject: CRIME ALERT

A female student has reported that she was abducted from the 500 block of North 4th Street at approximately 11:30 PM on February 17, 2003. She states that she was held at an unknown location for approximately 24 hours when she was released uninjured. Wanted for questioning in this incident is an African-American male, 22-25 years of age, 6',
weighing 185 lbs. The subject has a heavy build and is wearing his hair in corn rows. Also wanted for questioning is a white female, 21-22 years of age, 5'2", 135 lbs. with long blonde hair. It is reported that the subjects were driving an older model, four-door Buick, grey or green in color.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is encouraged to contact Public Safety at ***-****. In addition, we remind all members of the campus community to avoid walking alone on campus, especially in the evening and to contact Public Safety any time they wish to be escorted while walking on campus.

Subject: INDIANA STATE STUDENT RECANTS ABDUCTION STORY

An Indiana State University student who reported last week that she was abducted from campus has recanted her story.

The student originally told police that she was abducted from the 500 block of North 4th Street at approximately 11:30 p.m. on February 17, taken to an unknown location and held for 24 hours before being released uninjured.

In a signed statement the victim admitted the abduction did not occur and that she did not intend the police to become involved in what she described as a "personal matter."

The student indicated that she was aware of the seriousness of this matter. After consultation with the Vigo County Prosecutor's Office, it was agreed that no criminal charges would be filed in this case.

Safety and order have been restored. I can sleep again at night.

Did you notice on Tuesday, though, that the Haute police were out in force? I had to go to the mall and some other errands, and I passed no fewer than 12 police cars (I counted) in various parking lots, lanes of traffic, etc. Not counting the one across the street from our parking lot when I arrived in the morning and the two that drove by my house late at night. I wonder what was up.

Hmmm...I can't say that I saw a cop all night or day on Tuesday. I even went to Denny's at about 4:30am and while the chances are really high of seeing a cop there at that time, there were none. I was at the golf course for a few hours and then went home...I still don't remember seeing any cops. ...Or I was especially unobservant...or they were especially covert.

I had forgotten about that actually, and roamed around campus in my usual manner at all hours between midnight and dawn.

Yeah, I'm fairly pissed. You'll see a whole big story about her recanting in today's Statesman. The whole "escaped from Bigfoot [on Chestnut] to Days Inn" (which is very near my apartment complex) wasn't sitting well with me.

Some people have very strange ideas of a good time... would you want to be naked in the back of a car in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this time of year?
