Jul. 13th, 2001 05:08 amThe system administrator was quick in discovering that his server had been hacked from an outside source. I thought I might be under suspicion since the physical server is only twenty feet away from where I sit, but since I wouldn't have to hack it to host files I'm in the clear. The fact that it was hacked is the biggest problem. The university just incorporated a server based credit card payment system via telephone, and network security has been proven inadequate. Interesting things will happen.
Interesting things -- our life-sciences department director has been hosting a mirror site for www.download.com using state funded equipment and the university's bandwidth. q: Why? a: because he can. I would like to have 'misappropriation of university resources' defined to me before I go apeshit and set up a counter-strike server on every subnet. Is there something somewhat illegal about using state funding to sponsor private enterprise?
