Can you say clusterfuck?
Cllluusterfuck.
Our entire campus network has been royally screwed since one o'clock this morning. The network engineer has been on the phone with Cisco for about seven hours, and I've been on the phone off and on for the last eleven hours in two minute intervals telling people why 'the internet is broke.' The greatest part of it all is that today is the day for new student registration and orientation. This means that a thousand or so young individuals and their parents have gathered here to begin their journey toward academic achievement, only to wait all day long without being able to register. My phone has been ringing nonstop with users and Uni staff asking when it will be fixed. Joe, one of our network engineers, still has no idea when it will in working order, so I think I'll stay and collect some more overtime. I haven't been able to do any of my normal work yet...so I wait.
Last night was quite a bit of fun, though the fishing wasn't all that successful. I met my brother at my dad's house in the late afternoon, and we loaded up firewood and a refrigerator before heading to the cabin. We did quite a bit of work before gearing up the boat and heading downstream. We fished for a couple of hours and had a few beers before deciding that our luck would be better upstream of our cabin. There have been a few cranes(ithink) in the area. They're beautiful birds. I wished for a camera. We found a nice spot and dropped anchor for a while. I caught two decent catfish and a buzz....and lots of cursing from my brother's direction. He lost sooooo many of his rigs by getting them snagged on the bottom, I'd hear his line pop and bust up laughing. Though I had my back to him, the sound became too familiar. The real problems started when the flywheel spring broke while my brother was trying to start the motor. I did the exact same thing last year. The rope just hangs there, and won't retract back into the motor. We pulled anchor to drift with the current for a while, and as we neared Dave's cabin I paddled like HELL to his boat and latched on. I haven't talked to dad yet, but I'm sure he's HIGHLY amused by his broken motor. My brother and I talked about buying him a new one so he doesn't have to repair his old one every year.
We fished off the bank for a while after the night grew black, and finally resigned to the camp fire after my brother lost three more rigs and I was fished out. Billy stopped by for a while and hung out with us around the fire. Next to a campfire is the best place in the world to hold a conversation. My brother understands me better than almost anyone, and talking to him keeps me somewhat grounded. We went to sleep at four, but his allergies started restricting his breathing and he woke up coughing. We went drove to his house to get his medicine and sleep there. I slept from about 5:30 to 7:10...and now I'm starting to get sleepy. People who call me to ask stupid questions suck...overtime rules.
Our network engineer gave up, so I get to go home. When the other network guru comes in and resolves the problem he'll call Virgil in. I'm tired of hearing the phone ring.
Now I suppose I'll see if anyone is still at my dad's for his b-day party, and head that way.
